 DIY mosquito repellent

Summer is drawing near! Can't you just feel it in your soul? The temperatures are rising, humidity is somehow making it difficult to breathe (and causing a mess of my hair) ... Birds are chirping, the flowers are dancing. Oh, it's a beautiful time-of-year!!

Okay, Okay - I'll make the sacrifice and exist among the moist air, and unbelievable frizzy hair paired with this conversation:  "Hey, 1985 called, they want their hair back!"..."Why, thank you, kind sir, for bringing that to my attention!!"
I can typically deal with it, because, let's face it - summer is a magical time. But, the one thing I can't deal with - are those pesky mosquitoes.

And, what makes it worse,- is that if I want to enjoy the magic that is Summer -  I'm told I have two options:

1. Be eaten alive
2. Douse my body with poison

We've heard it a million times. "There's an oil for that!" And before I really did my research and begun using essential oils myself, I was very skeptical. But, thankfully - my skepticism was demolished when I finally was able to add a 3rd option to my summer mosquito troubles.

3. Use all-natural essential oils

So without further ado, I give to you - the answer to your summer-time prayers!

  • 4 oz Spray Bottle
  • 2 oz Boiled Water
  • 1 oz Witch Hazel
  • .5 oz Jojoba Oil - Optional, but will add a nice moisturizing feel!
  • Your choice of these mosquito repelling essential oils (Try to pick 3 or more) -- Lavender, Clove, Peppermint, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Basil, Lemon, Geranium, Lemon-Eucalyptus, Thyme, Lemongrass.  --- We recommend therapeutic grade!
Fill your Spray Bottle with the boiled water. Add witch hazel and the optional jojoba oil. Drop 50 drops of essential oils. NOT 50 of each oil, but 50 TOTAL. You can choose the amount of each oil as long as it adds up to no more than 50 drops total, or no more than 15% of the total substance. Be conscious of the amount you are putting into the spray bottle, as you will need ample space at the top of the bottle to be able to shake the repellent. Before each spray, make sure you are shaking the bottle, as the essential oil may begin to separate!
*Please speak to a licensed medical provider before using essential oils on small children, those with medical conditions, and those who are nursing or pregnant.*
But, I'm already covered in mosquito bites! What do I do?! Fear not! Give yourself some relief from that burning by rubbing a few drops of lavender oil directly onto the bite. I would also recommend diluting a little tea-tree oil with jojoba oil to rub directly onto the bite as well. This will provide moisturizing relief as well as help clean the wound due to the antibacterial healing properties of tea-tree!
Enjoy your summer! :) Until Next Time!!

  • Wow, I had not thought of this. My son on the spectrum is terrified of getting sick from mosquito bite. I cringe every time I put on a store bought repellant. Ironically I never thought of essential oil for this.
    Thank you.
